One of the things I love about Japan the most is that almost wherever you go, you can expect to find brush pens! I think this is because it's still common practice for them to use calligraphy in signing greeting cards. Even in convenience stores, they have a really small selection of brush pens! I also got to experience shopping at a legit DAISO store which is famous for selling most of their stuff at 100yen which is approximately 40php each. So cheap! Their Medium Brush Pens are no exception which is why my mom pointed me towards them. She knows her hoarder son so well LOL
If you have friends who are calligraphy enthusiasts or enjoy arts, these are perfect souvenirs to give! It's a uniquely Japanese gift that I'm sure they'll appreciate.
The beautiful body design is strikingly similar to the Akashiya Koto Brush Pens (my review here) with the patterned Washi design. However, with these DAISO pens, it's printed into the plastic so it feels less authentic unlike the Akashiya Koto which is in legitimate Washi paper and feels amazing, however the printed plastic is 10 times more resistant to staining and dirt collection.
The DAISO Medium Brush Pen has a felt tip nib which is surprisingly flexible and durable for just 40php. For a better brush size reference, it's almost a perfect match to the Faber Castell Pitt Artist Brush Pens. I don't own one so it isn't included in the photo huhu but I have seen and tried it and I can definitely say the two can be twins!
These brush pens are so lovely and straightforward and so easy to use. However, the red pen is more pigmented than this in real life. The lighting just brightened it in the photo.
Current song stuck in my head is Little Mix's Love Me Like You which shows in my sample writing. Haha! I tested it out on a smooth Bristol board surface and it had this whiteboard marker-like finish! However, on regular paper, the finish is opaque and is not streaky at all; definitely absorbs fast.
I feel like these are definitely one of the best brush pens you can try if you aren't really looking for anything too expensive and just want to try it out. So perfect for beginners because of its ease of use. Unfortunately, I don't think this is available in local DAISO stores just yet, but if you're planning a trip to Japan soon, you should definitely check these out! :D
Good to know there are less expensive options for pens like this. Newbies need something less expensive to try out if they can do good calligraphy or it is not for them.
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear that atlast got some inexpensive deals for us who are not experts in using these beauties.
ReplyDeleteThe pen does have a really nice design. It looks like a really good buy.
ReplyDeleteThats very cheap! 40 pesos only
ReplyDeleteIf i am into calligraphy i might buy this for starters
wow i will definitely buy these pens, they are intersting
ReplyDeleteI want to try calligraphy and these are really good pens to use for practice. Thank you!! Must head over to Daiso now :)
ReplyDeleteThis pen looks so good.. Very neat and nice writings..
ReplyDeleteHaha... Your mom sure knows your taste so well. My mom always buys off chunky jewelry whenever she spots one, coz she knows the hoarder daughter in her would love 'em! Lolz. Btw, at this price, this would be perfect for beginners to try out their hand in calligraphy before going for costlier ones.
ReplyDeleteI love Daiso! I get most of my beauty supplies from their store. Good quality and cheap!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to the Daiso in Singapore to see if there's any here! I don't do calligraphy, but my boyfriend and best friend does once in a while!
