Mesa Filipino Moderne

Typing this post now, I can’t believe I actually found the time to blog! LOL This week has been incredibly crazy, and I have a feeling the weeks to follow aren’t going to be any exception to this, so before schoolwork starts to pile up again (Which in my estimation is a few days from now), let me tell you about my experience at Mesa Filipino Moderne!

My family and I went to eat here a few weeks ago to celebrate my older brother’s birthday. The choice to go here was a bit out of the blue but Filipino food is always a welcome change and it’s also a new place to blog about! :)

One of the most striking things that I love about this place is the interiors! It was this combination of rustic traditional furniture mixed in with modern interpretations of otherwise old art! There was a lot of weaving going on in the ceiling and I’m so sad that I realized only now that I didn’t get to take photos! :(

On to the food, first up is their famous Sisig In A Pouch which is literally sisig (A delicious Filipino dish made mostly out of pork meat and innards.) in what looks like a fried wanton wrapper. Definitely not the healthiest dish but it sure was good! I probably wouldn’t have more than two as it can get a little fatty.

Next up is their Crispchon which is their house specialty. (I know, I know. It’s a lot of pork for one night right?) I was pleasantly surprised to see that they prepared the Crispchon in a really similar manner as to how Chinese restaurants serve their Peking Duck which is usually the skin wrapped in a thicker variation of rice paper (Lumpia Wrapper) with hoisin sauce, spring onions, and cucumber.

Also, when you order this dish, you have a choice of getting the remaining meat cooked in the way you want it! Just like the Peking Duck in Chinese restaurants! :D

The pork is then wrapped in a pandan-flavored wrapper and is served with three sauces: Sarsa, Hoisin (Not sure), and a sauce reminiscent to mayonnaise! This dish is a must-try when you eat at Mesa because it is so unique other than just being delicious!

There was also Sinigang infused with Buko juice as well as little pieces of Buko flesh in it! Definitely one of the more interesting dishes of the night, the Buko tones down the sourness without compromising the kick and makes just a little bit more refreshing!

Fried Tilapia dipped in four sauces. (Vinegar, Sweet Chili, Spicy Vinegar, and Bagoong)

It was good but I wouldn’t go so far as to say it was special. Just plain old Fried Tilapia! :)

We also had asparagus in what I thought was garlic sauce! Again, nothing very special. I loved how tender the asparagus was, though!

This is the dish I wish I had more of! Adobong Pusit/Stewed Baby Squid. I will never get tired of the sour-salty kick of classic Adobo which is why this dish has a lot of my love.

In terms of flavor, my favorite would have to be the tofu salad. It’s silken tofu, topped with Century egg and a prawn. When eaten together, the sauce and the Century egg add so much depth that it’s such a refreshing dish compared to the fried/roasted stuff. Definitely recommend this!

Their mango sago is a bit too sweet for my taste. I like my mango sago with a little tang because a mango isn’t a mango if it was 100% sweet. Like any fruit, there should be a little fresh sourness to it.

The dessert that definitely got my attention was their Pandan Macapuno Rumble! It’s fairly simple now that I think about it; Coconut-flavored ice cream topped with Pandan-flavored gelatin and corn flakes. I loved how understated the flavors were and the ice cream had this subtle coconut-y aftertaste that really hit the spot. This dish is a good way to end your meal here! :)

I admire Mesa a lot for being so smart with the way they thought about their dishes. Nothing about this place is unauthentic and unbelievable. It’s definitely a place where you can enjoy Filipino food with a modern twist! I’d definitely come back here again, but I probably won’t have as much fatty foods. LOL

Mesa Filipino Moderne is located 264 Tomas Morato cor. Scout Fernandez, Quezon City. You can also find it at Greenbelt 5.

Have fun! :)
