Touches of Gold with The Kuretake Chu-Ji No. 22 Gold Metallic Brush Pen

On my parents' last trip to Hong Kong, I asked them to pick up this beautiful brush writer by Kuretake - the Chu-Ji No.22 Metallic Brush Pen! I already saw this when I went last July but I was already over the budget with all the COPIC markers I got. Huhu I was beyond excited to try this out because *metallic* gold!! Read on for the full review.

Kuretake's No. 22 brushes have more straightforward packaging compared to the other lines like Wink of Stella.

The brush nib is made of soft nylon fibers which I've learned to love ever since I started using ZIG Kuretake. Their synthetic brushes are so lovely to use and so soft! This one is no exception.

As usual, you take the yellow ring off and screw everything in together to get the ink flowing!

Tip comparison: the Chu-Ji No. 22 has the largest brush tip compared to the ZIG Cocoiro Real Brush Tip and the Wink of Stella.

The ink is super gloopy and thick with this brush pen. I actually had to alternate between squeezing and letting go because the ink bubbled at the edges at times.

All concerns immediately disappeared when I tried out how wonderful this brush pen is. The ink is by far the most opaque I've ever seen while the brush control is just as lovely and easy to handle as the Wink of Stella! Sadly, the subtle shimmer of the metallic ink doesn't really show on camera. :(

On black paper, I think this brush pen needs about two coats to have a fully metallic finish but this is probably because I did this on old black paper with a semi-rough surface. I bet using this on a finer and smoother black surface would be wonderful!

Summed up my college expertise with this sample work. Haha! My favorite thing about this brush pen would definitely have to be the opacity of the ink. I can color a piece of paper with any color I want and layer it with this brush pen and it would totally be able to cover it up. So many new possibilities for art with this one!

You can pick up the Kuretake Chu-Ji No. 22 at Swirls & Strokes and Pens Galore PH as well as Scribe stores here in the Philippines!

  8. Amazing! I'm into gold and black right now and this brush pen is a dream! I'm so purchasing one for myself but it might just end up in storage since I'm not that good with calligraphy yet. Haven't gotten the basics down too.
